Fioritura a Castelluccio di Norcia nel 2026

Between late May and mid-July, the Castelluccio plateau is the setting for a particularly significant event: the Flowering. For several weeks, the monochromatic monotony of the pasture is broken by a mosaic of colors, with shades ranging from ochre yellow to red. Although the Bloom Festival usually falls on the third and last Sundays of June, there is no specific day to admire this enchanting spectacle. Every year, everything depends on the season’s weather patterns. The floral species that color the Pian Grande and Pian Perduto during this period are countless; walking along the trails, we may encounter: gentians, daffodils, violets, poppies, buttercups, asphodels, Viola Eugeniae, clovers, wood sorrels, and much more. Is the bloom early? …is it late? …when will it happen? It is impossible to predict the timing of the bloom on the Piani di Castelluccio.

Every year, Mother Nature renews the spectacle of the Fiorita in Castelluccio di Norcia.

It would be more accurate to speak of the flowering of the Castelluccio plateau; in fact, the entire plateau is enveloped by this unique natural spectacle.

The plateau begins to burst into color with wildflowers—undoubtedly the most beautiful, though unfortunately the least known—as the entire Mergani area and beyond fills with wildflowers. Here, nature alone takes the lead, renewing the species present every year.

At first glance, wildflowers may seem less striking than those in cultivated fields, but as soon as you set foot on the trail leading to the Mergani, you immediately realize just how stunning and intoxicating they are—incredible colors, light, and scents envelop you, making you want to stay there forever.

Depending on the planting season, sowing begins as the snow melts; the cultivated fields begin to bloom, or the hillsides come into bloom; in the fields, the plants that live in symbiosis with the lentils each develop at their own distinct pace, causing the colors of the plots to change constantly.

The fields not sown with lentils beautifully break up the harmony of colors, with bright green stripes of wheat and soft purple hues of sainfoin—a fact well known to the farmers of Castelluccio, who each year strive, within the constraints of the crop rotation cycle, to further enhance the picture of the blooming landscape.

Pian Perduto and part of the Colli alti e bassi are also planted with flowers every year; since the snow usually melts late, the blooms in this area appear after those on the hill. Once you pass Castelluccio heading toward Visso, you enter a whole new world of incredible colors. Thanks to the many trails that wind through this area, you can truly enjoy the beauty of these blooms to the fullest.
